The Victorian originals are single-pane, divided-light, and in many cases still on their original sashes. The glazing compound holding the glass in place has been settling for a century. Cleaning these windows is a slow conversation with old materials — the right chemistry, soft tools, no forcing of sashes that resist — rather than a fast crew wipe-down.

Mid-century storm panels were added over many of the originals in the 1950s and 1960s. They do a real job, but they double the surface area that needs attention: both faces of the storm and both faces of the primary pane, cleaned in sequence, everything reseated before the next panel comes off.

Open Country, Trail Dust, and the Marais des Cygnes

Ottawa sits on more exposed Franklin County ground than most of the metro, with fewer mature trees between rooftops and the open Kansas sky. Direct sun reaches south-facing glass all day, but direct wind does too, and it carries agricultural dust from the surrounding plains.

The Prairie Spirit Trail runs through the county on a crushed-limestone surface. In dry July and August, trail use raises a fine calcium-carbonate dust that drifts onto nearby properties and settles on sills and glass.

It is light in weight and not always visible until it catches the afternoon light at the right angle — at which point it is months of residue at once.

The Marais des Cygnes river corridor releases cottonwood in June, and downtown's Washburn courthouse blocks pick up a share of that drift through the Main Street canyon.
